It isn't often that cocktails are on our minds, but when beer enters into the mix we definitely start listening. You could probably imagine our excitement when we discovered that Ana Wolkowski, winner of Monday night's ‘Beating Hearts’ all-female cocktail competition, created an original cocktail using Bellwoods Cat Lady IPA.

The competition was sponsored by Dillon's spirits (based out of Niagara), with proceeds going to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Ana crafted the cocktail using Dillon's White Rye, sweet vermouth, lemon, egg white, and a rye kernel/white peppercorn syrup that she made herself. The garnish? It may look familiar to craft beer lovers: a single hop flower (this one rehydrated in rye, though).

The resulting cocktail is an interesting mix of fruity and arboreal, similar to that of an IPA, with a bite that comes from the peppercorns. She even said that her aim was to create a somewhat "sessionable" cocktail, and one that didn't hide the flavours of the beer -- the point was to let the hops shine.

While Ana's exact recipe involves some hard-to-obtain ingredients, we hope it encourages more people to experiment with beer in their cocktails. If all else fails, we know a great recipe with Cat Lady that only calls for one other ingredient: a pint glass.

Cheers to Ana on her win, and for her craft beer inspiration!
